Giovanni Trapattoni’s side claimed runners up spot in Group 8 and finished the second qualifying round with a two-legged tie against France. Ireland lost out 2-1 on aggregate after a William Gallas goal in extra-time where officials missed the infamous Henry handball in the build-up, costing Trapattoni’s men a place in South Africa
