The defender was entering his final season at St James' following his move from Wimbledon back in 1995. He was limited to just five appearances as Sir Bobby Robson's men finished an impressive 4th in the Premier League. Barton enjoyed a seven-year stay on Tyneside, making 219 appearances before joining Derby County in February 2002.
