Rare third shirt as worn over two seasons under manager Terry Fenwick when Pompey competed in the First Division. In the first season of this design's use, relegation to Division Two was avoided on the last day of the season on goal difference, with Millwall going down instead. Fortunes would turn under Fenwick in the second season, as Terry Venables arrived at Portsmouth as chairman, with the team enjoying a run to the FA Cup quarter-finals beating Premiership side Leeds United en route. In the league, they would miss out on the playoffs as they finished 3 points off and secured a 7th place finish
