Ultra rare away shirt as worn during a bad year for the Kiezkicker saw them slump to a 16th placed finish in the Bundesliga. They faced Stuttgarter Kickers in the promotion/relegation playoff and the tie had to be decided by a 3rd Leg after the sides drew 2-2 on aggregate after the first two matches. A 3-1 loss at the neutral Parkstadion in Gelsenkirchen saw Pauli relegated back to the 2nd tier for the first time since the 1987/88 campaign
