In the 1982-83 season, the side recorded their highest ever finish, as runners-up behind Champions Liverpool, qualifying for the UEFA Cup and securing European football for the first time in their history. Luther Blissett finished the season as the divisions top scorer with 27 goals. The following two seasons were not as successful, resulting in 11th place finishes on both occasions, however the side did reach the FA Cup final in 83-84, losing to Everton 2-0 in the final
